About this property

Home to 181 students, Merchant City House (formerly Liberty House) has an intimate feel to it and is ideally located in the heart of Glasgow. Both the University of Strathclyde and Glasgow Caledonian University are within a 10-minute walk, while the University of Glasgow is only 20 minutes away by underground.

Don’t want to share a bathroom? The good news is that all of the rooms in Merchant City House are en-suite, so the only thing you need to share with your flatmates is the fully-fitted kitchen and living area. If you’d like even more independence, you can choose to live in one of our studios, which include their own kitchens.

Thanks to its central location, you simply need to step outside of Merchant City House and you’ll find shops, bars and restaurants all around. Student-friendly shops like TK Maxx, Primark and H&M are just a couple of streets over. When the sun sets, pick from a huge range of pubs and bars, or head along to Delmonicas and rent a private karaoke room with your friends.

Booking Info

Updates to the policy -

·  No Visa No Pay: if a student’s visa application is rejected or if the UK university application is rejected, the student needs to send the rejection letter to Unite, within 7 days of receiving it, and before the tenancy start date. The letter must include a date and the student’s name. On production of this the student will be released from their tenancy. The T&Cs for these policies can be found on Unite Students website.

· Visa processing delay: If a student cannot get a visa on time to come to the UK and wishes to cancel their booking with Unite, but is unable to provide a proof that the visa cannot be issued: the student must contact Unite Students, or the agency who helped process the booking. Unite Students will support the students on a case by case basis.

· University / School intake delayed: if the start date of a course has been postponed to a later date, the student can provide evidence showing the new start date, then Unite will delay the tenancy start date to suit the new start date of the course. The student will only be liable for the rent from this new start date.

· Travel Ban: if there is a travel ban either in the student’s country of origin, or in the UK, preventing students from traveling as planned: students affected by the ban can contact Unite Students or the agency who helped with the booking. Unite Students will delay the tenancy start date until the end of the travel ban. The student will only be liable for the rent from this new start date.

· Early leave request: We are also aware that some students may want to leave the UK and return to China / to their home country over the coming weeks.
If a student decides to leave early then just to confirm that our early leave policy will be enforced.
That means they will be liable to pay the remainder of their tenancy unless they can find someone to take it over for the remainder of the term.

- Unless you have already collected the keys to the accommodation, you may cancel your booking by writing or sending an e-mail to us at [email protected], at any time during the 7 days after we send you an e-mail confirming your booking is complete (the “7 Day Cooling-Off Period”). If you do that, we will make no charge and will return your any deposit or any payment of advance rent to you.

- Provided the 7 Day Cooling-Off-Period has expired, you will have to pay all amounts due under your Tenancy Agreement unless a replacement Tenant is found for your Room or you enter into a new Tenancy. If a replacement Tenant is found for your Room before your start date, we will release you from your Tenancy Agreement on the date seven days after the new Tenant’s Tenancy Agreement is signed. If a replacement Tenant is found for your Room after your start date, we will release you from your Tenancy Agreement from the start date of the replacement Tenant's new Tenancy Agreement. If you have occupied the Room prior to this, you will be charged £50.00 to cover our costs of preparing the Room for the replacement Tenant.

No Place, No Pay - Prospective first-year undergraduate students:

If you are a prospective first-year undergraduate student and you do not meet the grades of the university you initially applied to, you may be released from the contract and receive a refund of your deposit provided you provide proof of this within 7 days of receiving your results. You may also be eligible to be released from the agreement if you are a prospective first-year undergraduate student and you choose to go to a different University because you have exceeded your expected grades.

Documents that would need to be supplied - A written rejection letter from your chosen university/college or UCAS or a screenshot of your UCAS status which confirms that the required results were not achieved, in Case 1. Copy of the proof of acceptance of your new university by UCAS adjustment in Case 2.

No Place, No Pay - International Students:

If you are a student moving to the United Kingdom from overseas for the first time to undertake study at a UK University and are not already residing in the UK or have not previously attended a UK university. Then in case of rejection from UK University, you can apply for you cancellation until 1st August 2018 and receive a refund of your deposit or advance rent payment.

After this cut-off date, you will have to pay all amounts due under your Tenancy Agreement unless a replacement Tenant. Until a suitable replacement is found, you may not be released from the tenancy agreement and are liable to pay the rent. A £50 admin fee is charged to prepare the room if you have already occupied the room before a replacement tenant moves in.

Before the 1st of August, for your cancellation request to be reviewed, you must provide a copy of the rejection letter from the UK University that you have applied for within 7 days of receiving your results.

Documents that would need to be supplied: The rejection letter from University/ Proof of IELTS examination failure / Proof of A level or equivalent examination failure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can I have friends/family to stay overnight?
They want you to consider your room as your home and are happy for you to have guests to stay. All they ask is that you let the on-site team know and that you consider your other flatmates and treat them with courtesy. You are responsible for any guests that you have staying with you and are liable if they cause any problems.

Q.Can I smoke in my room?
All properties are non-smoking throughout so please speak to your property team to ask where you can smoke. There are usually outside areas for you to smoke with ashtrays provided.

Q.What happens if I can't make a payment?
Your instalment due dates are outlined in your tenancy agreement and by accepting the terms and conditions of your contract, both customer and guarantor are accepting responsibility for payment on the dates provided. If you are unable to make payment for your rent, please speak to your property team. They will be able to discuss with you your payment options and advise you of any future implications dependant on how late the payment will be.

Q.Can you store my luggage if I get it delivered to site before I arrive?
As they will be preparing the room for your arrival, they will not be able to store any luggage for you before you arrive.

Q.What do I need to bring with me to check in?
You just need to bring a valid form of photo ID to prove who you are. There’s no need to print off your tenancy agreement or booking confirmation.

Q.Can someone else pick my key up for me?
No. For security reasons, we can only give your room key directly to you.

Q.Can my family or friends stay for a few nights after dropping me off?
You are allowed to have guests to stay, and one or two nights is usually fine. They just ask that you are considerate of your flatmates. For those first few days while you are all arriving and settling in, it may be better for your guest to make other arrangements if possible.
