Top Five Tips for Freshmen

Australia Sep 17, 2019

Ready to embark upon a new phase of life? Beginning university is a significant milestone for every student and getting into a good university should always be celebrated. Being nervous about starting college is a completely normal feeling. Know that you are not alone because every freshman is going through a similar set of feelings. You might have heard multiple times by now that college life is going to be the best phase of your life. With unlimited opportunities, a new found-independence and a whole new set of people around you’re in for some real fun!

To those who find this experience a little daunting, these freshmen tips will help you get through the first year of college with less stress and more optimism. After all, a little extra positivity never hurt nobody!

1: Read about your college

Every university has a unique history that all students should know about. So why wait for college to begin to get to know about your campus? Knowing about the historical spots, sports traditions, the motto, and cool hang out places beforehand will make you feel like you know your way around on day one itself. Share these facts with other freshers to break the ice. Even when you’re feeling lost or overwhelmed, don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers. They’re there to make sure that you don’t feel like an outsider.

2: Attend orientation

Many students choose to skip Orientation-day but we’d suggest you to not do that.  It is the perfect opportunity to know about your major, get introduced to your professors and some of the classmates and list down the popular clubs and societies and how the application procedure works. You will get all the necessary freshmen advice for first year of college. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and participate in the orientation activities. Orientation is all about getting to know about your university through the eyes of an insider.

3: Don’t be afraid to take the first step

Facing an entirely new set of people can be a nightmare for introverts. But college is the perfect place to get over that fear. A simple “Hello! You mind if I sit here?” can be the beginning of a new friendship. Always smile at new people and ask them how they are doing. Every freshman is going through the same thing as you. It is as simple as that. Quit overthinking. Nobody here expects you to be blabbering like Janice from F.R.I.E.N.D.S anyway!

4: Always attend classes

You’d think missing classes is considered cool in university but that’s not the right attitude when starting college. Attending all classes will not only help you get better grades (pretty obvious, duh!), but it will also be helpful to get used to a productive routine right from the beginning. Who knows, you might discover the hidden Hermoine Granger within you! Getting to know your professors is extremely important as they will be there to guide you through all semesters. The professors at college are comparatively more interactive and WAY cooler than your school teachers. They focus on the individual growth of their students, so make sure you don’t miss out on their wise guidance. Being a regular to class may also fetch you some extra credits. Always say yes to brownie points! 😉

5: Take assignments and projects seriously

Getting A’s in high school might have been a bed of roses but double hard work goes into getting good grades in college. Give yourself time to research properly and then go ahead with actually doing the assignment. Make sure you write notes and ask questions in every class. Soon after beginning college, you will realize that it is less about the grades and more about learning. So even if you are not getting the best grades, focus on the bigger picture and try again next semester!
